Graduate degrees conferred to Manlangit and Villamater

On this season of graduation, we wish to congratulate our colleagues who has successfully finished their graduate courses this Academic Year 2008-2009.

Mr. Rene B. Manlangit earned his Masters in Library and Information Science (MLIS) from UP-School of Library and Information Studies and joined around 4,000 other students who received their respective degrees during the 98th General Commencement Exercises last 26 April 2009 at the University Amphitheater, Diliman, Quezon City.

Ms. Augusta Rosario A. Villamater on the other hand was conferred the degree of Doctor of Education Major in Educational Management by Manuel S. Enverga University Foundation during the hooding ceremony that took place last 16 April 2009 at the MSEUF grounds.

If you knew of other colleagues in our region who received their respective degrees this season of graduation, please let us know by dropping a line or two and we will promptly add his/her name in the roster. Lets us be one and together in joyful celebration of the academic achievement of our colleagues.

Batiancila: Recipient of Erasmus Mundus Scholarship

Mr. Marcial Reyes Batiancila, Library Director of San Sebastian College Recoletos de Cavite and currently the President of the PLAI - Southern Tagalog Region Librarians Council (STRLC) has been accepted to the International Master in Digital Library Learning (DILL) for the academic year 2009-2010 and 2010-2011. In addition, he has been selected to receive an Erasmus Mundus Scholarship grants of €21,000 per academic year for two academic years.

DILL is a two-year Master Degree (120 ECTS credits) designed for information professionals who intend to work in the complex world of digital libraries. All students will follow a given structure, spending at least one semester at all three partner institutions: Oslo University College, Tallinn University, and Parma University.

Our warmest Congratulations to you Marcial! We hope this will inspire other colleagues to continue to pursue higher learning not only to uplift oneself but others as well!

World Book and Copyright Day


Today we celebrate the World Book and Copyright Day. Read Zarah Gagatica post for the Philippine activity scheduled on April 25, 2009 (Sat) at the Instituto Cervantes as our part of this worldwide observance.

It was a natural choice for UNESCO's General Conference to pay a world-wide tribute to books and authors on this date, encouraging everyone, and in particular young people, to discover the pleasure of reading and gain a renewed respect for the irreplaceable contributions of those who have furthered the social and cultural progress of humanity.

The idea for this celebration originated in Catalonia where on 23 April, Saint George's Day, a rose is traditionally given as a gift for each book sold. The success of the World Book and Copyright Day will depend primarily on the support received from all parties concerned (authors, publishers, teachers, librarians, public and private institutions, humanitarian NGOs and the mass media), who have been mobilized in each country by UNESCO National Commissions, UNESCO Clubs, Centres and Associations, Associated Schools and Libraries, and by all those who feel motivated to work together in this world celebration of books and authors.

ILOVEMYLIBRARY Campaign

The University of the Philippines College of Engineering Library II is spearheading and advocating a proper library etiquette and the need to respect the library as a SHARED SPACE through the "i need.i value. ILOVEMYLIBRARY" awareness campaign.

They encourage other libraries and information centers to take part in this campaign to promote responsibility among our library users (faculty, students and staff) in the care, upkeep and maintenance of the library materials, facilities and equipment. The campaign outlines 10-Simple Ways to care and love the Library.

We are doing this already in our own libraries and information centers so this is not new but what is noble about this new endeavor is that we are being asked to take part in a concerted & synchronized efforts to promote library awareness campaign for maximum effects. We have nothing to lose but more to gain if we actively support & promote this campaign in our institution.
