1st Meeting of Philippine Experts on Cataloging

The Board for Librarians, PAARL and the National Library of the Philippines invite librarians especially catalogers to participate in the 1st Meeting of Philippine Experts on Cataloging, which will be held at the National Library of the Philippines, T.M. Kalaw, Ermita, Manila on November 16-17, 2006. This meeting will replicate the 4th IFLA Meeting of Experts on an International Cataloging Code held last August 16-18, 2006 in Seoul, Korea and continues IFLA’s worldwide regional meetings towards harmonization of cataloging principles and work towards a future international cataloging code.

The goal of the meeting is to increase the ability to share cataloging information worldwide by promoting standards for the content of bibliographic and authority records used in library catalogs. The objectives of the meeting is to discuss cataloging practices in the academic, school, special and public libraries and to come up with a national cataloging policy for Philippine materials if necessary. This is also a chance for librarians to review and comment on the draft Statement of International Cataloging Principles created by the European, Latin American and Caribbean, Arabic-speaking and Asian participants .

The program includes four plenary sessions to present position papers on the principles of cataloging from the “Paris Principles” of 1961, on the Functional Requirements for Bibliographic Records (FRBR) on 5 key issues of bibliographic access, and to discuss recommendations and next steps. There will be working group meetings to focus on issues such as personal names, corporate body names, seriality, uniform titles, and multi-volume / multiple part works in which several sub-themes will be highlighted and discussed with the expectation that the groups will present recommendations to the final plenary session.
