Promoting Research and Scholarship through Open Access and e-Publishing

The UP School of Library and Information Studies (SLIS) and the UP Library Science Alumni Association (UPLSAA) will be having its third lecture, as part of the SLIS 2007 lecture series, entitled "Promoting Research and Scholarship through Open Access and e-Publishing" on August 15, 2007, 10:oo am at the Computer Laboratory, SLIS, 3/F Gonzales Hall, University of the Philippines Diliman, Quezon City.

The speaker will be Ms. Fides Datu-Lawton (BLS 1971) who is currently the Director of the Library Resources Unit of the University of Technology, Sydney, Australia.

Below is an abstract taken from an email communication sent by Ms. Mila M. Ramos to PLAI-STRLC yahoogroups dated 27 July 2007 :

The lecturer will provide an introduction to Open Access (OA), the major OA initiatives worldwide and some key imperatives that underpin them. In addition, she will discuss its benefits to researchers, parent institutions and to the society in general by opening up research and scholarly outputs.

Drawing on her experience in developing their own publishing programs in the University of Technology, Sydney, the lecturer will demonstrate the ways in which OA and online publishing can facilitate access to research and scholarship. Also, she will discuss the impacts of implementing digital repositories and online programs on librarians, academic and research staff and editorial teams.

Key implementation issues and policies will also be highlighted to open discussion with delegates.

Forum: Web Harvesting and Data Mining

The Ortigas Center Library Consortium (OCLC) Inc. in cooperation with Ortigas Foundation is organizing a forum on "Web Harvesting and Data Mining" on August 16, 2007 from 1:00-5:00 p.m to be held at the Ortigas Foundation Library, Ortigas Building in Ortigas Avenue, Pasig City

The objectives of the forum are:
- To benchmark web sites to facilitate searching of information
- To give personal instruction in searching for relevant, informative websites
- To improve library services

A forum fee of Php P200 will be charged to non-members, Php150 for members, and college students Php 100.00. This fee is inclusive of snacks and certificates.

2007 Philippine Bookfair Schedules

11th Philippine Academic Bookfair

The 11th Philippine Academic Bookfair will be held from July 25 - July 29, 2007 at the Megatrade Hall 1, 5th Level, Building B, SM Megamall EDSA, Mandaluyong City, Philippines. This event is organized by the Association of Booksellers for Academe and the Professions (ABAP). Exhibit is open from 10:00 A.M till 9:00 P.M., daily.

28th Manila International Bookfair

The 28th Manila International Bookfair will be held from August 29 - September 2, 2007 at the World Trade Center Metro Manila Financial Center Area, Sen. Gil Puyat Avenue cor. Diosdado Macapagal Blvd., Pasay City, Metro Manila, Philippines. This year's theme is "Inspire. Aspire. Read." Exhibit is open from 10:00 A.M till 8:00 P.M., daily.

Forum: Creating Webliographies

The University of Santo Tomas Library Science Alumni Association (USTLSAA) will conduct a half-day forum on "Creating Webliographies" on July 27, 2007 at Miguel de Benavidez Library Conference Hall, UST from 8:00am to 12:00nn.

The Association aims to introduce new ways of devising search guides and finding aids.

Registration fee is Php150.00 and Php for students to include snacks and certificate.

1st Philippine Academic Library Suppliers (PALS) Book Fair

Bookfair season this year is on full swing. Starting last May 10-13, 2007, with the holding of the Book World Fair held at World Trade Center as part of the World of Knowledge five-tiered exhibit and 2 weeks from now the ABAP organized bookfair at Megamall will gather in one roof one of the biggest bookfair in the country.

Regular bookfair delegates will have another opportunity to honed their selection skills, meet new library suppliers probably not participants to this gigantic bookfair and hopefully locate some of the hard to find Filipiniana materials carried by this new library suppliers and publishers as the 1st Philippine Academic Library Suppliers (PALS) Bookfair will be on July 16-20, 2007 from 9:00am -7:00pm @ UP Alumni Hostel, Diliman, Quezon City, the event theme is "Cross 21: Communication Resources for Strategic Services in the 21st Century".

Book launching of Prof. Andres G. Sevilla, "Mass communication ethics : a primer" published by Great Book Publishing will be at the opening day at 4:00 pm.
