Promoting Research and Scholarship through Open Access and e-Publishing

The UP School of Library and Information Studies (SLIS) and the UP Library Science Alumni Association (UPLSAA) will be having its third lecture, as part of the SLIS 2007 lecture series, entitled "Promoting Research and Scholarship through Open Access and e-Publishing" on August 15, 2007, 10:oo am at the Computer Laboratory, SLIS, 3/F Gonzales Hall, University of the Philippines Diliman, Quezon City.

The speaker will be Ms. Fides Datu-Lawton (BLS 1971) who is currently the Director of the Library Resources Unit of the University of Technology, Sydney, Australia.

Below is an abstract taken from an email communication sent by Ms. Mila M. Ramos to PLAI-STRLC yahoogroups dated 27 July 2007 :

The lecturer will provide an introduction to Open Access (OA), the major OA initiatives worldwide and some key imperatives that underpin them. In addition, she will discuss its benefits to researchers, parent institutions and to the society in general by opening up research and scholarly outputs.

Drawing on her experience in developing their own publishing programs in the University of Technology, Sydney, the lecturer will demonstrate the ways in which OA and online publishing can facilitate access to research and scholarship. Also, she will discuss the impacts of implementing digital repositories and online programs on librarians, academic and research staff and editorial teams.

Key implementation issues and policies will also be highlighted to open discussion with delegates.
