The Asia-Pacific Conference on Library & Information Education and Practice (A-LIEP) is an international conference which has been regularly held in the Asia-Pacific region every one or two years since 2006. The conference provides Library & Information Science (LIS) educators, researchers and practitioners with the opportunity for sharing their research results, experiences and innovations in LIS, and stimulating greater collaboration and cooperation regionally and globally.

The 8th A-LIEP (A-LIEP 2017) will take place in Bangkok, Thailand on 13-14 November 2017. This conference will be arranged, for the first time, together with the 19th International Conference on Asia-Pacific Digital Libraries (ICADL) to create synergy in the LIS development and advancement of digital libraries.

Submission Guidelines

Prospective authors are invited to submit their full papers, short papers, and posters which must be original and not simultaneously submitted to any journals or conferences and address the list of A-LIEP 2017 topics. The following paper categories are welcome:

Full papers: length 8 to 12 pages

Short papers: length 4 to 7 pages

Posters: abstract of 1 to 2 pages

The paper type of each submission should be indicated on the first page of the manuscript – full paper, short paper, or poster. As English is used as the official language of this conference, all submissions must be written in English. A paper template is provided for your reference (single-spaced, Times New Roman 11 pt. font).

1st Philippine Librarians Summit : Addressing Issues and Concerns

The PLAI-NCR Librarians Council, in partnership with the University of Santo Tomas-Department of Library and Information Science, invites you to the 1st Philippine Librarians Summit: Addressing Issues and Concerns to be held on March 17-18, 2016 at the Benavidez Auditorium, Benavidez Bldg., University of Santo Tomas, Espana, Manila. This is a two-day Summit that aims to address the various issues and concerns faced by library and information professionals more than a decade after the implementation of Republic Act 9246 or the Act to Modernize the Practice of Librarianship in the Philippines. Specifically, the Summit has the following objectives:

1. To highlight and clarify the issues and concerns affecting librarians and the library profession in the country;
2. To invite representatives from government agencies and other entities to give their comments/response to the specific issues and concerns;
3. To encourage industry leaders and other stakeholders to discuss possible solutions and recommendations that would address the problems presented;
4. To come up with an Action Agenda for the library profession in the Philippines.

Participants to the summit are expected to gain an awareness of the real issues and concerns affecting the library profession. This Summit can also provide the venue for increased dialogue, understanding, and consensus among the officers and members of various library associations, thus come up with recommendations for policy formulations and/or amendments to RA 9246 as well as an Action Agenda for the library profession. The registration fees are as follows: Non-PLAI Member - P2,000; PLAI Member – P1,500; Student P1,000. This shall cover kits, meals (2 lunches, 2 a.m. snacks and 2 p.m. snacks), and certificate of participation.

Since the venue can only accommodate a limited number, interested participants are strongly advised to pre-register and pay the corresponding amount. UP FLIPP LibSpeak 2016 : Redefining LIS

UP Future Library and Information Professionals of the Philippines (UP FLIPP), in partnership with The University Library and Philippine Librarians Association, Inc. - National Capital Region Librarians Council (PLAI -NCRLC) proudly presents LibSpeak 2016: Redefining LIS.

LibSpeak 2016: Redefining LIS will be held on February 1, 2016 at the UP Main Library lobby, Gonzalez Hall, University of the Philippines – Diliman, Quezon City. Registration will start at 7:30 AM. The event is open to the general public, with high school students as the contestants. Also expected to attend are new information professionals and LIS practitioners of the various colleges, universities and institutions.

The Asia-Pacific Conference on Library & Information Education and Practice (A-LIEP) is an international conference series which has been held in the Asia-Pacific region every one or two years since 2006. The aim of the conference is to bring together LIS educators, researchers and practitioners to share their research, experiences and innovations in Library & Information Science, and stimulate greater collaboration and cooperation regionally and globally.

The 7th A-LIEP (A-LIEP 2016) will be held in Nanjing, China on 3-4 November 2016. Nanjing is a famous historical and cultural city with a history of 2500 years and regarded as one of the “top four ancient cultural capitals of China”. This conference will continue the tradition of examining new challenges and developments in LIS, in particular potential paradigm shifts in the age of big data.

Call for Papers : Journal of Critical Library and Information Studies (Inaugural Issue)

The Journal of Critical Library and Information Studies is a peer-reviewed open access journal which addresses the need for critical discourse in library and information science and associated domains such as communication and media studies. It critically engages the cultural forms, social practices, the political economy, and the history of information and information institutions. It also seeks to broaden the methodological commitments of the field and to broaden the scope of library and information studies by applying diverse critical, trans-disciplinary, and global perspectives. The journal engages issues of social and cognitive justice and the historical and contemporary roles of documentary, information, and computational technologies in creating, mediating, surveilling, and challenging personal and social identities in cultural and political economies of power and expression.

For its inaugural issue, the JCLIS will focus on why such a journal is needed, as a platform for critical discourse in LIS. JCLIS seeks to publish research articles, literature reviews, and possibly other essay forms (up to 7000 words) that use or examine critical perspectives on library and information studies. Some of the issues that might be addressed are: What are the current gaps in disciplines and discourses that make the JCLIS necessary? How can scholars speak to past silences in research and thinking in information studies? What is “critical perspective” in library and information studies research? What ethical or political commitments might a critical perspective entail? What do critical perspectives look like in practice?

The theme for the inaugural issue is broad by design in order to encourage diverse perspectives in describing, analyzing, and providing insight into how and where library and information studies might intersect with ethical, philosophical, and/or political concerns, interpretative or speculative approaches to analysis, or experimentation with novel, unique, or exploratory research designs that might be marginalized or excluded from mainstream library and information studies research. JCLIS aims to be a an inclusive platform for library and information studies research,including locally specific research designs and investigations as well as research that adopts a more global or international frame of inquiry. To that end, the journal also welcomes unpublished works in translation.

Deadline for receipt of manuscripts has been extended to December 18th, 2015.

The Journal of Philippine Librarianship (JPL) is the annual peer reviewed journal of the UP School of Library and Information Studies (UP SLIS).
