Takbook : a book drive


In support to the Philippine Librarians Association’s (PLAI) project “One Million and Counting . . .: Book Drive for Victims of Calamities” Philippine Librarians Association, Inc – Southern Tagalog Region Librarians Council (PLAI-STRLC) organized TAKBOOK, a fun run. The objective of this activity is to generate books and other instructional materials to be donated to libraries badly affected by calamities.

TAKBOOK will be held on November 10, 2013 Sunday at 6:00 in the morning. It will also be one of the activities of the different provincial chapters in Southern Tagalog in celebration of the National Book Month and Library and Information Science Month. This is a simultaneous activity to be held in Cavite, Laguna, Batangas, Rizal, Quezon, Marinduque and Mindoro.

Books will serve as registration to this activity and will be given to the libraries affected by calamities in the province or to the other libraries in the nearby provinces/region.

PAARL Library Benchmarking in Bangkok

Dear Colleagues:

The Philippine Association of Academic/Research Librarians, Inc. is pleased to invite you to its four-day annual international library benchmarking in Bangkok, Thailand, dubbed as “Collaborative Benchmarking Plus 1: The Amazing Bangkok, Thailand Experience” to be held on 15-18 October 2013.

The target outcome of the benchmarking activity is to increase the performance of participating libraries and information centers by adopting the best practices of selected libraries in Bangkok, Thailand. The tour specifically aims to (1) identify best practices of selected libraries in Bangkok, Thailand in terms of services and programs, resources, processes, staff development, and learning spaces; (2) learn new trends and transformation in a hybrid library environment; and, (3) foster professional and cultural exchange between Filipino and Thai librarians. 

In addition to the benchmarking, participants will have a chance to attend and participate in an International Forum on Trends and Transformation 2013: Managing Collections in an Electronic Environment to be held at the Chulalongkorn University Library on 16 October 2013, 2:00-7:00PM.

The forum will focus on the value ebooks and online journals in academic research work and promotion/marketing of online resources. and in celebration of the 34rd Manila International Book Fair (MIBF) 

will be holding a seminar-workshop entitled: 
The Librarian as a Systems Thinker in the Emerging Future 
facilitated by Ms. Fides Manuel-Abad of the Organizational Change Consultants International, Inc. (OCCI)

 The event will provide an overview of Systems Thinking in the library and information center setting. Developed by Peter Senge, American scientist and director of the Center for Organizational Learning at the MIT Sloan School of Management, Systems Thinking provides a novel way of viewing the world, and on a more specific scale, the organizations we belong to. This seminar-workshop, with the use of entertaining and educational exercises, aims to demonstrate how seemingly incremental changes coupled with simple shifts in perspectives can help us achieve better and more efficient results.

 This lecture will be held on 12 September 2013, 1:00 to 3:00 PM, at Meeting Rooms 4 & 5 of the SMX Convention Center, Mall of Asia Complex, Pasay City. Registration fee is PhP 200 inclusive of materials and certificate.

LAQuep-L, Inc. 7th Year Anniversary Seminar-Workshop

In celebration of its 7th year anniversary, the Librarians Association of Quezon Province-Lucena Inc. (LAQueP-LInc) have arranged a Seminar-Workshop on “RDA: Introduction and Workshop” to be held at Queen Margarette Hotel Downtown, Lucena City on September 6, 2013. This workshop is designed for librarians, school librarians, library personnel,   library assistants, and para-professionals working in the library.

In this regard, we cordially invite you to this activity. The following objectives are anticipated to be achieved:
  1. To provide introductory concepts on the key features and structure of Resource Description and Access;
  2. To teach the participants on how to transcribe/record elements of manifestations and items using the new rules as prescribed in RDA; and
  3. To inform participants on the importance of RDA and issues leading to it.

National Competency Based Standards for Librarians

A Second Consultative Workshop for the Adoption and Prescription of a National Competency Based Standards for Librarians (NCBSL) by PRC will be held on September 5, 2013 at The National Library of the Philippines Auditorium.

In connection with this, the Board for Librarians is inviting librarians from all types of libraries such as academic, school, public and special who are also members of the different professional library organizations to participate in the Second Consultative Workshop. The draft of the Standards will be presented again for discussion and review before the Board for Librarians will finalize/endorse a resolution to this effect to the Commission proper. The adoption and prescription of a NCBSL is part of the BFL Competitiveness Roadmap.
