Pride of place in a work so intimately tied to archival materials must go to librarians. Throughout my work I was assisted greatly by the marvelous staff of librarians at UC Berkeley.

Even more, I am grateful to the staff of unnamed librarians at the University of the Philippines, Diliman, who courageously and conscientiously collected and filed all of the political journals, manifestos and ephemera of the late 1960s and 1970s.

Book Review : 2 Filipiniana Books

In the Philippine Star news today, a book review in the column of Elfren S. Cruz mentioned two (2) "Philippine published books that are great readings". A possible worthy addition to our library Filipiniana collection.

I have rediscovered these past few days that long weekends are great for reading books; and, that there are still so many Philippine published books that are great readings. Here are two discoveries on my reading journey during the recent Undas holidays.

At the School Gate : a Children's Book

Another Filipiniana materials for our library collection.

AT the School Gate—a children’s book about the experience of a 15-year-old high school student during the government’s witch hunt against people branded as Leftist dissidents in 1991.

Written by Sandra Nicole Roldan, with illustrations by Nina Martinez, this book depicts memories of martial law, as well as the bravery displayed by children and families of so-called dissidents in the aftermath of the government’s anti-Leftist campaign 27 years ago. The author is an offshore PhD candidate at RMIT University in Melbourne, Australia, and teaches Creative Writing at the College of Arts and Letters in UP Diliman.

At the School Gate is great reading for children and young people ages 10 years old to senior high school, as well as freedom-loving people of all ages.

Peace and the Law : Perspectives on the Draft Bangsamoro Basic Law

The Draft Bangsamoro Basic Law is stirring debate on the extent to which the Constitution can accommodate the aspiration of the Bangsamoro. In the course of the hearings, Congress invited experts on constitutional law to enlighten lawmakers on the legal issues implicated by the draft bill. Among the many resource persons invited by Congress were Dean Merlin Magallona, and Supreme Court Associate Justice Vicente V. Mendoza. Dean Pacifico A. Agabin has also presented his views on this issue in a forum organized by the San Beda Graduate School of Law held in May 2014.

The UP Law Center is presenting these perspectives in the hope that it will lead to a constructive debate on the constitutionality of the draft law and clarify legal issues that will ultimately lay the foundations for peace.

Pre-Lecture Review : The speaker is very qualified and always a joy to listen to her presentation. The topic is interesting although the time of the free lecture is a little bit late from those coming from the provinces to be able to go home before midnight. Could the organizer move the starting time a little bit earlier, 3 PM perhaps?. The email announcement is bereft of details to what activity is the free lecture is part of.

The lecture (1 or 2 hours?) could help libraries and librarians increase their Filipiniana collection provided they have an internet access in the library to be able to connect to these sites. Adding the bibliographic information and URL of the online Filipiniana publication in the OPAC will be a "cut & paste" stuff, if the library software didn't support Z39.5 protocol.

For those still in the stage of planning automation/computerization of their library, it is still worthwhile to attend this activity, the speaker is too much qualified for the topic and admission is free. You may learn a thing or two.

Incidentally this lecture could be the perfect follow-up activity to that PAARL completed project “Filipiniana Books for College Libraries” wherein participants in that ABAP/PAARL sold-out forum last July where it was introduced where all eager to have a printed or ecopy of included publications in that Filipiniana bibliographic tool. Although until now, i have not heard from PAARL the exact cost of the printed copy and the CD version.
