Pangungunahan ng Komisyon sa Wikang Filipino ang taunang pagdiriwang at magkakaroon sa Agosto 2, 2010 ng pagpupugay sa watawat sa Malacañang Grounds bilang hudyat ng pormal ng pagsisimula ng pagdiriwang.

Ang Komisyon sa Wikang Filipino ay nilikha ng Batas Republika Blg. 7104 (Agosto 14, 1991) na iniaatas ng Konstitusyon ng Pilipinas, na magsagawa, mag-ugnay at magtaguyod ng mga pananaliksik para sa pagpapaunlad, pagpapalaganap at preserbasyon ng Filipino at ng iba pang mga wika ng Pilipinas.

Ang Komisyon sa Wikang Filipino ay nilikha bisa bisa ng batas-republika-7104, na nagtatakda ng mga kapangyarihang nito, mga tungkulin at mga gawain.

Itinatag ang Surian ng Wikang Pambansa (SWP) alinsunod sa Batas Komonwelt Blg. 184 na nilagdaan ng Pangulo ng Komonwelt, si Manuel L. Quezon noong Nobyembre 13, 1936.

Noong Enero taong 1987, batay sa nilagdaang Kautusang Tagapagpaganap Blg. 117 ng Pangulong Corazon C. Aquino, ang SWP ay pinalitan ng Linangan ng mga Wika ng Pilipinas na pagkaraan ay binuwag naman nang buuin ang Bagong Konstitusyon ng Pilipinas noong 1987. Petsa Agosto 14, 1991 nang likhain sa bisa ng Batas Republika Blg. 7104 ang Komisyon sa Wikang Filipino. May atas ang Komisyon na magsagawa, mag-ugnay at magtaguyod ng mga pananaliksik para sa pagpapaunlad, pagpapalaganap at preserbasyon ng Filipino at ng iba pang mga wika ng Pilipinas.

NBW Theme for 2010 Celebration

In the PLAI NBOT meeting I attended last July 22, 2010, the final 2010 NBW Theme is

Pandaigdigang Pakikipag-ugnayan sa Pamamagitan ng mga Aklat at Impormasyong Teknolohiya at Komunikasyon

The Opening Ceremonies and Book Character Parade will be on November 24, 2010 at the National Library of the Philippines (NLP), T.M. Kalaw St., Ermita, Manila. Prizes are at stake for the best float as follows: 7k for the 1^st Prize, 5k for the 2^nd Prize, 3k for the 3^rd Prize and three consolation prizes of 1.5k each.

Awarding of the winners in the Storytelling, Essay Writing and Poster Making contests will also be given during the program of the opening ceremony. The prizes are as follows: 4k for the 1^st Prize, 3k for the 2^nd Prize and 2k for the 3^rd Prize. An additional consolation prizes of PhP 500 for six participants in the poster making contest.

The National Book Week (NBW) is being celebrated from November 24-30 as part and parcel of the month long activities of the Library and Information Services Month as per Proclamation no. 837 s. 1991 declaring the month of November 1991 and every year thereafter as "LIS Month".
