Calling all UP-SLIS alumni, it's time again to cast your vote for the 2008-09 UPLSAA Executive Board who will be inducted into office during the scheduled Alumni Homecoming on 2 May 2008 at Balay Kalinaw.

World Book and Copyright Day

Last year, April 20, 2007 to be exact, we published an entry on the World Book and Copyright Day.

from Booktopia

Celebrate World Book and Copyright Day at the Filipinas Heritage Library in Makati. This is a whole day event with prominent writers like National Artist Virgilio Almario and award-winning fictionits Beth Dalisay and Susan Lara talking about their creative processes and their works.

In the afternoon, there will be an extensive discussion on copyright by experts in the field to enlighten copyright owners (like writers, illustrators and publishers) and copyright users (schools, media, libraries)

The event is free of charge. Please call 920-9853 or 926-8238 and look for Lily or Minda.

from Unesco

By celebrating this Day throughout the world, UNESCO seeks to promote reading, publishing and the protection of intellectual property though copyright.

23 April: a symbolic date for world literature for on this date and in the same year of 1616, Cervantes, Shakespeare and Inca Garcilaso de la Vega all died. It is also the date of birth or death of other prominent authors such as Maurice Druon, K.Laxness, Vladimir Nabokov, Josep Pla and Manuel Mejia Vallejo. It was a natural choice for UNESCO's General Conference to pay a world-wide tribute to books and authors on this date, encouraging everyone, and in particular young people, to discover the pleasure of reading and gain a renewed respect for the irreplaceable contributions of those who have furthered the social and cultural progress of humanity.

The idea for this celebration originated in Catalonia where on 23 April, Saint George's Day, a rose is traditionally given as a gift for each book sold. The success of the World Book and Copyright Day will depend primarily on the support received from all parties concerned (authors, publishers, teachers, librarians, public and private institutions, humanitarian NGOs and the mass media), who have been mobilized in each country by UNESCO National Commissions, UNESCO Clubs, Centres and Associations, Associated Schools and Libraries, and by all those who feel motivated to work together in this world celebration of books and authors.

EBSCO Free Databases

EBSCO Publishing has announced the release of three (3) databases namely: LISTA, Teacher Reference Center (TRC) and the GreenFile. Below is the description I got from their site.

LISTA
EBSCO Publishing is proud to provide the Library, Information Science & Technology Abstracts (LISTA) database as a free resource to anyone interested in libraries and information management. This world-class bibliographic database provides coverage on subjects such as librarianship, classification, cataloging, bibliometrics, online information retrieval, information management and more. Delivered via the EBSCOhost platform, LISTA indexes nearly 600 periodicals plus books, research reports, and proceedings. With coverage dating back to the mid-1960s, it is the oldest continuously produced database covering the field of information science.

Teacher Reference Center (TRC)
This index of over 260 titles from the most popular teacher and administrator trade journals, periodicals, and books is now also offered free via the EBSCOhost platform. This database provides coverage on key education topics such as Assessment, Continuing Education, Current Pedagogical Research, Curriculum Development, Instructional Media, Language Arts, Literacy Standards, Science & Mathematics, and more for K-12 Teachers & Librarians.

GreenFILE
In keeping with our commitment to environmental consciousness, EBSCO proudly offers GreenFILE, a freely accessible research database focusing on the relationship between human beings and the environment, with well-researched but accessible information on topics ranging from global warming to recycling to alternate fuel sources and beyond. Comprised of scholarly and general interest titles, as well as government documents and reports, GreenFILE offers a unique perspective on the positive and negative ways humans affect the ecology. Drawing on the connection between the environment and disciplines such as agriculture, education, law, health and technology, GreenFILE will serve as an informative resource for anyone concerned about the issues facing our planet. GreenFILE’s initial release will include A&I for more than 600 titles, including comprehensive coverage – from to volume 1, issue 1 to present – for Bioscience (back to 1964), Conservation Biology (back to 1987), i>Journal of Ecology (back to 1913) and Journal of Environmental Planning & Management (back to 1948). The total number of records is approximately 295,000, and full text is provided for more than 4,600 records from open access titles.

Graduation tribute

Today I would like to pay tribute to a fellow STRLC member who recently finished his graduate course in Library and Information Science from UP Diliman. After nth year of waiting, the long is over.

There came a point in time when he could have chosen not to complete his thesis and just concentrate on being of service to his fellow librarians through several media at hand. But a few push, some encouragement and right turns of the knob, found him standing at the defense room and now finalizing the final draft of his thesis. He has butterflies in his stomach but he made it with flying rainbow colors.

Truly I agree with Aristotle when he said, "The roots of education are bitter, but the fruit is sweet." We know what we had to go through in order for us to be where we are right now. There are many hurdles and challenges we have to passed in order for us to taste the sweet fruit that awaits at the end of each battle.

Congratulations Rene B. Manlangit, for a job well done. You may have conquered that stage of your academic path, but a new stage will soon start. May you continue to be as active and energetic as you have always been. Let your wings take you where you dreams have led you.

To all STRLC members who have also finished their degree, our best congratulations too. We hope that as you finished the race, you will continue to live to the expectations of our profession. Together let us work in making better the reputation of our profession and show the world that librarians like teachers create great impacts in the lives of every individual that seeks learning.
"A graduation ceremony is a cultural tradition termed as a rite of passage. It is a ritual or ceremony that marks one stage of a person's life to another."
