PLAI-STRLC Resolution no. 2006-04

PLAI-STRLC RESOLUTION PRESENTED AND APPROVED DURING THE 3RD GENERAL ASSEMBLY MEETING HELD AT CAPUCHIN RETREAT HOUSE, LIPA CITY, BATANGAS ON 26 SEPTEMBER 2006.

PLAI-STRLC Resolution no. 2006-04

USE OF THE INITIAL RL (Registered Librarian) AFTER THE NAME OF REGISTERED LIBRARIAN

The use of initials before or after a name is an existing practice in some profession (e.g. Law, Nutrition, Nurse, Engineer, etc.) that in past several librarian professional seminars, gatherings, and meetings, a proposal to adopt a similar initials for the licensed librarian was felt needed. But the idea didn’t take off until the STRLC officers brainstormed on the idea after receiving feedback from librarians in the government sector that they experienced discrimination from other profession in their institution with similar PRC supervised board license.

After several brainstorming session, the officer adopted the position of why not use similar initials to further drum beat awareness of the profession and as form of marketing our hard won recognition as one the profession that requires examination before anyone is allowed to practice in the country. The initials of LL (licensed librarian), RIP (Registered Information Professional), and those pattern after the Physical & Occupational therapist, RLRP (Registered librarian of the Republic of the Philippines) were considered. LL was initially favored until someone opined that it could be mistaken for “loko-loko” that finally the officers settled for RL.

It was further agreed by the officers that the proposal be brought to the attention of the GA for approval and widespread adoption.

WHEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED AS IT IS HEREBY RESOLVED AND ADOPTED UNANIMOUSLY WITHOUT DISSENT OR ABSTENTION BY THE GENERAL ASSEMBLY THAT REGISTERED LIBRARIANS IN REGION IV ARE ENCOURAGE TO USE THE INITIAL OF RL IMMEDIATELY AFTER THEIR LASTNAME TO PROMOTE AWARENESS AND RESPECT FOR THE PROFESSION.

October Happenings

We are posting as early as now other tentatively set events for October so as to guide us and possibly calendar them ahead of time as part of our first semester-ender activities and allot / re-allocate / request budget for our attendance. Details are still preliminary and changes are expected.

STRLC Members Links to their Friendster Page

If you have not noticed it yet (at least for those regular reader of this blog!), we have added links in the names of the 2007 paid STRLC & lifetime members to their friendster page to increase familiarization of the biographical information of some STRLC member. This move will atleast (we fervently hope) energize those who have signed up to update their page and upload recent photos to facilitate recognition among STRLC members in any events or gatherings we attended and thus increase the likelihood of greater cooperation and shared undertakings. Likewise, for those members without yet an account will be motivated enough to sign up and felt their presence in the social networking sites and be a part of the 21st century.

Incidentally, Von latest post lamented on the state of librarianship in the country:

What is the state of librarianship in the Philipines? I think the fact that PLAI and PATLS do not have websites says a lot about "Philippine librarianship in the 21st century." And of those librarians' associations that do have websites, some have not been updated in years. There seems to be a disconnect between what has been said—and will continue to be said—at seminars and conferences about the skills librarians need today and what is actually being done by those responsible for the continuing education of professional librarians and current and future LIS students.
Prompting Arnold to comment:

The same, when you left. The same ten years ago. The same for God knows how long ago.

- Same people running the different professional associations.

- Same people delivering lectures/talk about almost the same "emerging trends" topics
At the very beginning of STRLC blog existence, we helped in the promotion/marketing of other librarians associations seminars, conferences, fora, activities, etc. and never seen them as competitor in providing for the professional growth and continuing education of our colleagues but rather as a partner in creating a critical mass of highly motivated individuals to propel the association to greater heights 3-5 years from now.

Although a group within STRLC viewed & insisted that our blog exist purely for strlc sponsored activities and not to serve as other association marketing machine (READ: cpe provider competitor). We resisted this myopic view and persevered to post other associations events hoping that someday a critical mass of participants will be created.

We are even a trailblazer for posting immediately online the conference ppt and made this open access to all interested colleagues and forfeiting an opportunity to re-use the material for another paid conference or fora. We believe and continue to believe that posting those ppt online far outweight the monetary gain we will get to the immediate and unquantifiable need of other colleagues not able to attend said activity to improve their professional knowledge & competence.

We believed that forming a critical mass of technologically aware and inclined members will save the day for the association soon atleast initially in the Southern Tagalog Region. We hope that this linking will instill awareness on every member of the association to take an active role in moving out from the "old culture" and be a part of the "emerging culture of excellence in the profession" in a more collaborative, transparent, and collegial way (RBManlangit and AGAnday)

Note: Just in case you are a paid member and you have a friendster account that we have missed. Please send us a comment or a note and we will gladly add you. For those whose account we are not sure, we deliberately did not include them since the account has not been verified or if we inadvertedly added the wrong link to your page, promptly call our attention. We are more than glad to hear from you. Thanks.

Site Advisory

This site is best viewed in Firefox. Due to some technical aspect of html coding we are not too familiar with and coupled by our limited free time to troubleshoot the problem during office hours, Internet Explorer (IE) users may think some part of article takes too long to load when in facts there is none (e.g. viewed this post in IE and then in Firefox). Not too long ago some % (percentage) character showed interspersed in the posted article when viewed in IE but none in Firefox. We have resolved this technical hurdle already. Time to switch to Firefox perhaps?

Likewise, we noted in the Sitemeter visitor tracking software that quite a number of this site visitors are looking for hotmail or yahoo email addresses we suspect might be spammers or scam artists. We were not that bothered before since zero minute was consumed, and only the Google / Yahoo referred page was viewed. Lately we noticed that they are spending quite sometime viewing posted articles culled from a Google / Yahoo search result.

We considered ourselves responsible netizens and thus to avoid spam robots or scam artist from harvesting email addresses in this site, we resolved to re-edit earlier posted articles with email addresses following this syntax: name(at)site(dot)com We may opt to use square brackets instead of parenthesis to mislead spam robots. I guess we need just to "cut and paste" the email addresses from now on and just change the (at) and (dot) to arrive at the correct syntax.

We hope this small inconvenience we have to bear will make Internet less traffic for spams and con artists.
