Merry Christmas From Your PLAI-STRLC Family
This
Xmas,
I would
like to put
up a tree in my
heart, and instead
of hanging presents,
I would like to put the
names of all my friends.
Close friends and not so close
friends. The old friends, the new
friends. Those that I see every day
and the ones that I rarely see. The ones
that I always remember and the ones that
I sometimes forget. The ones that are always
there and the ones that seldom are. The friends of
difficult times and the ones of happy times. Friends
who, without meaning to, I have hurt, or without meaning
to have hurt me. Those that I know well and those I only know
by name. Those that owe me little and those that I owe so much.
My humble friends and my important friends. The names of all those
that have passed through my life no matter how fleetingly. A tree with
very deep roots and very long
and strong branches so that
their names may never be
plucked from my heart. So
that new names from all
over may join the existing ones. A tree with a very
pleasant shade so that our friendship may take a
moment of rest from the battles of life. "May the
happy moments of Christmas brighten every day
of the new year". These are our sincere wishes.
A Blessed CHRISTmas everyone! Wishing you and your family Health,
Happiness, Peace and Prosperity this holiday season!!! May the magic
of Christmas abundantly fill our heart with all Warmth, Joy and Love
in 2016 and beyond!!! Merry Christmas from your PLAI-STRLC Family!!!

Word of the Year for 2015
Oxford Dictionaries Word of the Year is a pictograph, officially called the "Face with Tears of Joy" or emoji.
Digital communication is the sign of our times. And emoji functions extremely well in that medium, often in language-like ways. And for this reason, it is surely not a stretch to consider an emoji to be, if not a word in the conventional sense, at the very least, having language-like properties.
While Dictionary.com selected IDENTITY as the Word of the Year for 2015.
Dictionary.com has updated a handful of terms to reflect the new ways that people are speaking about the concept of identity explicitly. These include a new sense at the word identify to account for the common construction identify as and the addition of the term gender expression, defined as “the external expression of gender roles, as through socially defined behaviors and ways of dressing.” Further edits were made to the entry code-switching. Originally a linguistic term, code-switching has expanded in meaning in the recent past to encompass all aspects of identity beyond just language or manner of speech. The sociolinguistic definition is “the use of one dialect, register, accent, or language variety over another to project a specific identity.” The less technical sense is “the modifying of one’s behavior, appearance, etc., to adapt to different sociocultural norms.” Over the last few years, code-switching has emerged as important terminology for framing our multi-faceted identities.Today, Merriam-Webster announces that ISM, a small but powerful suffix as the Word of the Year for 2015 following the selection of the word "CULTURE" as the Word of the Year for 2014.
But not just any ism. The top isms to earn high traffic spikes and big bumps in lookups on the dictionary company’s website in 2015 over the year before are socialism, fascism, racism, feminism, communism, capitalism and terrorism.

Use of Social Media by the Library

"Social media has the potential to facilitate much closer relationships between libraries and their patrons – wherever users are based, and however they choose to learn about and access library services and resources. Current usage of social media by the library community generally remains ad hoc and somewhat experimental, but the uptake of these tools is accelerating, and they will likely play an increasingly important role in library service provision and outreach in the future".

Old banknotes good up to December 31, 2015
source: http://www.gov.ph/2015/05/29/old-banknotes-good-up-to-december-31-2015/
Bangko Sentral ng Pilipinas Deputy Governor Diwa C. Guinigundo today reminded the public that the old banknote series launched in 1985 can still be used for daily transactions up to December 31, 2015.
From January 1, 2016 up to December 31, 2016, the old banknotes can still be exchanged in authorized agent banks and the BSP Cash Department. However, starting January 1, 2017, the old banknote series will be fully demonetized or without monetary value.
This means that the New Generation Banknotes introduced in December 2010 will result in the circulation of a single currency series in the country. The New Generation Banknotes have more and enhanced security features to protect the safety of the public against counterfeiters.
The demonetization process of the old banknotes is in line with the provisions of Section 57 of Republic Act No. 7653, otherwise known as the New Central Bank Act, which authorizes the BSP to replace banknotes that are more than 5 years old. The old banknotes have been in circulation for almost three decades.

152nd Birth Anniversary of Andres Bonifacio
From the Official Gazette of the Republic of the Philippines: Today is the 152nd birth anniversary of Andres Bonifacio, the emblematic father of the Philippine Revolution and once the President of the Supreme Council of the Katipunan.

7 Books that Encourage Father-Child Bonding
from SmartParenting
Here's a list of books that are perfect for cuddle and read-aloud time
with Dad! by Tina Santiago-Rodriguez
1. Daddy Hugs
Written and illustrated by Karen Katz
This classic board book is perfect for daddies to read aloud to bab ies and toddlers. With its simple text and beautiful illustrations, you can also use it to introduce simple counting as Daddy gives Baby hugs to say “I love you!”.
2. Just Me and My Dad
Written and illustrated by Mercer Mayer
Featuring the well-loved Little Critter picture book characters, this book recounts the adventures of a father and son as they go on a camping trip. In spite of Little Critter’s boo-boos during the trip, he and his dad have fun putting up their tent, catching fish for dinner, and sleeping beneath the stars. Your kids will want Dad reading this over and over to them!
3. My Daddy! My One and Only!
Written by Zarah Gagatiga, illustrated by Jomike Tejido
This well-illustrated book features a simple story about a boy who envies the toys and cool gadgets his classmate brags about, which are gifts from his classmate’s father. He wonders what gifts his own father has for him, and eventually realizes how precious they actually are — the gifts of time, laughter, and presence. Written by a teacher, school librarian, and reading and literacy advocate, this bilingual book would make a great addition to your child’s library!
4. The Kiss That Missed
Written and illustrated by David Melling
This well-illustrated book is a perfect bedtime storybook for dads to read aloud to little ones. It tells of how a young prince’s dad is almost always in a hurry — even when blowing his son a bedtime kiss, which “misses” and flies out the window! The king sends a knight out to bring it back, resulting in a fun and charming adventure, which ends with a reminder for fathers to “slow down” especially when it comes to making memories with their kids!
5. Guess How Much I Love You
Written by Sam McBratney, illustrated by Anita Jeram
This classic picture book tells the story of how Little Nutbrown Hare asks his father, Big Nutbrown Hare, to guess how much he loves him. It becomes sort of like a “competition” between father and child, with Big Nutbrown Hare showing Little Nutbrown Hare just how high and far his love is. This is another must-have in your child’s library!
6. Just In Case You Ever Wonder
Written by Max Lucado, illustrated by Toni Goffe
This beautifully illustrated book shows a father’s unconditional love for his child. Its heartwarming message of love, comfort and protection shows children that even though they will grow and change, their father will always be there for them. Since the illustrations show a father interacting with his daughter, this will be perfect for you if you have little girls!
7. Meet My Superdad
Written by Maricel Laxa-Pangilinan, illustrated by Isa Natividad
This endearing book written by local celebrity mom Maricel Laxa-Pangilinan tells the story of how Donny tells his friends about how “super” his dad is — not because of any special “powers,” but because of all the special things he does for his family.

Oxford Dictionaries Word of the Year
That’s right – for the first time ever, the Oxford Dictionaries Word of the Year is a pictograph:, officially called the ‘Face with Tears of Joy’ emoji, though you may know it by other names. There were other strong contenders from a range of fields, outlined below, but emoji was chosen as the ‘word’ that best reflected the ethos, mood, and preoccupations of 2015.

Since its inception in 2010, the Festival has been a major gathering for authors, illustrators, publishers, and literature lovers around the Philippines and beyond. In the past years, the Festival has featured such literary luminaries and publishing experts as Chris Abani, FH Batacan, Robin Hemley, Christopher Cheng, Juliet Grames, Noelle de Jesus, David Parker, Vikas Swarup, Tim Tomlinson, National Artists for Literature Bienvenido Lumbera and Virgilio S. Almario, and Pulitzer Prize winners Junot Diaz and Edward P. Jones.
This year’s Philippine International Literary Festival is titled LALÁNG (likhâ): Writing in Place. Creating Your Place. How relevant is place in the creation and appreciation of literature? Does literature have to be reflective of geography? If a place can shape text/literature, can text/literature shape a place? This year the NBDB will bring the festival to Davao City, one of the country’s top historic, artistic, cultural destinations in order to engage lovers of literature from all parts of the archipelago in a series of discussions on Philippine literature and interactions with literary greats.
For the first time, NBDB will mount the Festival in Davao City, bringing together writers, illustrators, and publishing experts from various regions in the Philippines. The 6th Philippine International Literary Festival (PILF) also highlights the homecoming of several acclaimed Filipino writers including Mia Alvar. The Festival activities will include a plenary session and intimate conversation on Writing in Place with our guest authors. This event also brings regional literature to the fore, encourages the integration of diverse literature in all learning environments, and provides a venue for intimate discussion with literary idols. Festivalgoers will be able to attend talks on issues facing Philippine literature today: readership, language, and the publishing challenges faced by authors from the regions. Other activities will include artistic performances, literary exhibits, and a book fair.
This two-day affair will be held on November 20-21, 2015. Registration per day for the general public events is P100 for students and teachers, P300 for other professionals, including lunch and a festival kit. For online registration, please emaillitfest@nbdb.gov.ph with the subject line “SIGN ME UP FOR THE 6TH PHILIPPINE INTERNATIONAL LITERARY FESTIVAL” and the following information: full name, affiliation, and contact numbers.
