152nd Birth Anniversary of Andres Bonifacio

From the Official Gazette of the Republic of the Philippines: Today is the 152nd birth anniversary of Andres Bonifacio, the emblematic father of the Philippine Revolution and once the President of the Supreme Council of the Katipunan.

Awarding of Prizes of the NBW 2015 contest winners will be during the opening ceremony of the 81st National Book Week on 24 November 2015, Tuesday, 8:00am in the JPL Hall of Freedom, Lyceum of the Philippines University, Intramuros, Manila.

7 Books that Encourage Father-Child Bonding

Here's a list of books that are perfect for cuddle and read-aloud time
with Dad! by Tina Santiago-Rodriguez

1. Daddy Hugs
Written and illustrated by Karen Katz

This classic board book is perfect for daddies to read aloud to bab ies and toddlers. With its simple text and beautiful illustrations, you can also use it to introduce simple counting as Daddy gives Baby hugs to say “I love you!”.

2. Just Me and My Dad
Written and illustrated by Mercer Mayer

Featuring the well-loved Little Critter picture book characters, this book recounts the adventures of a father and son as they go on a camping trip. In spite of Little Critter’s boo-boos during the trip, he and his dad have fun putting up their tent, catching fish for dinner, and sleeping beneath the stars. Your kids will want Dad reading this over and over to them!

3. My Daddy! My One and Only!
Written by Zarah Gagatiga, illustrated by Jomike Tejido

This well-illustrated book features a simple story about a boy who envies the toys and cool gadgets his classmate brags about, which are gifts from his classmate’s father. He wonders what gifts his own father has for him, and eventually realizes how precious they actually are — the gifts of time, laughter, and presence. Written by a teacher, school librarian, and reading and literacy advocate, this bilingual book would make a great addition to your child’s library!

4. The Kiss That Missed
Written and illustrated by David Melling

This well-illustrated book is a perfect bedtime storybook for dads to read aloud to little ones. It tells of how a young prince’s dad is almost always in a hurry — even when blowing his son a bedtime kiss, which “misses” and flies out the window! The king sends a knight out to bring it back, resulting in a fun and charming adventure, which ends with a reminder for fathers to “slow down” especially when it comes to making memories with their kids!

5. Guess How Much I Love You
Written by Sam McBratney, illustrated by Anita Jeram

This classic picture book tells the story of how Little Nutbrown Hare asks his father, Big Nutbrown Hare, to guess how much he loves him. It becomes sort of like a “competition” between father and child, with Big Nutbrown Hare showing Little Nutbrown Hare just how high and far his love is. This is another must-have in your child’s library!

6. Just In Case You Ever Wonder
Written by Max Lucado, illustrated by Toni Goffe

This beautifully illustrated book shows a father’s unconditional love for his child. Its heartwarming message of love, comfort and protection shows children that even though they will grow and change, their father will always be there for them. Since the illustrations show a father interacting with his daughter, this will be perfect for you if you have little girls!

7. Meet My Superdad
Written by Maricel Laxa-Pangilinan, illustrated by Isa Natividad

This endearing book written by local celebrity mom Maricel Laxa-Pangilinan tells the story of how Donny tells his friends about how “super” his dad is — not because of any special “powers,” but because of all the special things he does for his family.

Oxford Dictionaries Word of the Year

That’s right – for the first time ever, the Oxford Dictionaries Word of the Year is a pictograph: , officially called the ‘Face with Tears of Joy’ emoji, though you may know it by other names. There were other strong contenders from a range of fields, outlined below, but emoji  was chosen as the ‘word’ that best reflected the ethos, mood, and preoccupations of 2015.

Book reviews: 5 books that will inspire you to travel

From: Philippine Daily Inquirer, 18 November 2015 issue.

With great inspiration comes great adventure. Here are some of the stories that will inspire you to travel:

Into The Wild by Jon Krakauer

Christopher McCandless decides to leave his home to escape from domestic violence. He abandons his comfortable life and becomes a hitchhiker, meeting new people and living in the wilderness where adventures happen on every corner. This non-fiction book will touch all kinds of emotions and make you realize that sometimes, being alone and away from your daily life will make you appreciate living even more.

Eat, Pray, Love by Elizabeth Gilbert

A search for everything—this is what urges Elizabeth Gilbert to travel in her memoir. After getting divorced, she travels to Italy, India and Indonesia to fight her depression. On her adventures to help her ease her anxiety, she discovers that the way she’s been living hardly scratches the surface of what the world has to offer. At the end of her wonderful journey a surprise awaits that changes her life.

The Hobbit by J.R.R Tolkien http://www.tolkiensociety.org/author/biography/

With the help of Gandalf, Bilbo Baggins agrees to help a group of dwarves on a quest to reclaim the Kingdom of Erebor. The journey from Shire to Erebor includes treacherous lands swarming with ogres, orcs, goblins and other dangers, while also having an unexpected encounter with the well-known character in the previous books, Gollum (Smeagol). This story is the prequel to The Lord of the Rings trilogy and it will take you to amazing places you’ve never imagined.

The Alchemist by Paulo Coelho

This book will encourage you to do whatever it takes to follow your dreams, even if you have to cross a continent to find out where the real treasure is. Despite the lack of money and experience, Santiago manages to pursue his Personal Legend because of perseverance and faith, making him achieve his goal while never giving up. This book will rouse your inner adventurer, making you long to find your own path and goals in life.

The Statistical Probability of Love at First Sight by Jennifer E. Smith

Although the main genre of this book is romance, The Statistical Probability of Love at First Sight allows you to experience the misfortunes of traveling alone and missing a flight. But all the hassles of the main character are soon forgotten when Hadley meets a handsome young man. This is a great read, especially when you’re at the airport waiting for your flight. This can help put you in the shoes of our heroine, wondering what it’s like to find love out of the blue. A real heartwarming novel that will make your heart flutter.

Relax with a cup of coffee and experience the world between the pages of these magical books.

ebooks : World Happiness Report 2015

from page 2 of this WHR 2015,

The world has come a long way since the first World Happiness Report in 2012. Happiness is increasingly considered a proper measure of social progress and a goal of public policy.

The first World Happiness Report was published in support of the April 2, 2012 United Nations High Level Meeting on Happiness and WellBeing. That meeting itself followed the July 2011 Resolution of the UN General Assembly, proposed by the Prime Minister of Bhutan, inviting member countries to measure the happiness of their people and to use this to help guide their public policies.

Philippine International Literary Festival

Info from NBDB website

The Philippine International Literary Festival (PILF), a landmark project of the National Book Development Board, has become a highlight of Philippine Book Development Month observed annually in November. The festival is NBDB’s way of celebrating literature and promoting best publishing practices through discourse on the issues of authorship and readership shaping the local book industry.

Since its inception in 2010, the Festival has been a major gathering for authors, illustrators, publishers, and literature lovers around the Philippines and beyond. In the past years, the Festival has featured such literary luminaries and publishing experts as Chris Abani, FH Batacan, Robin Hemley, Christopher Cheng, Juliet Grames, Noelle de Jesus, David Parker, Vikas Swarup, Tim Tomlinson, National Artists for Literature Bienvenido Lumbera and Virgilio S. Almario, and Pulitzer Prize winners Junot Diaz and Edward P. Jones.

This year’s Philippine International Literary Festival is titled LALÁNG (likhâ): Writing in Place. Creating Your Place. How relevant is place in the creation and appreciation of literature? Does literature have to be reflective of geography? If a place can shape text/literature, can text/literature shape a place? This year the NBDB will bring the festival to Davao City, one of the country’s top historic, artistic, cultural destinations in order to engage lovers of literature from all parts of the archipelago in a series of discussions on Philippine literature and interactions with literary greats.

For the first time, NBDB will mount the Festival in Davao City, bringing together writers, illustrators, and publishing experts from various regions in the Philippines. The 6th Philippine International Literary Festival (PILF) also highlights the homecoming of several acclaimed Filipino writers including Mia Alvar. The Festival activities will include a plenary session and intimate conversation on Writing in Place with our guest authors. This event also brings regional literature to the fore, encourages the integration of diverse literature in all learning environments, and provides a venue for intimate discussion with literary idols. Festivalgoers will be able to attend talks on issues facing Philippine literature today: readership, language, and the publishing challenges faced by authors from the regions. Other activities will include artistic performances, literary exhibits, and a book fair.

This two-day affair will be held on November 20-21, 2015. Registration per day for the general public events is P100 for students and teachers, P300 for other professionals, including lunch and a festival kit. For online registration, please emaillitfest@nbdb.gov.ph with the subject line “SIGN ME UP FOR THE 6TH PHILIPPINE INTERNATIONAL LITERARY FESTIVAL” and the following information: full name, affiliation, and contact numbers.

APEC 2015 Advisory

Danish study says, No Facebook means Happier Life

When we evaluate our lives, we are influence by social comparisons. How am I doing compared to my peers? Since social media is a constant flow of great news for other people, we wanted to conduct an experiment where a randomised trial group did not log on to Facebook for one week. We were surprised by the results.
"Instead of focusing on what we actually need, we have an unfortunate tendency to focus on what other people have," the authors of the study wrote.

Booklatan ng Bayan : 1st PUP Literary Festival

From NBDB website

On November 11 to 13, 2015, the National Book Development Board in partnership with Center for Creative Writing of the Polytechnic University of the Philippines is presenting Booklatan sa Bayan: The 1st PUP Lit Fest. Booklatan sa Bayan is a quarterly program of NBDB that aims to promote a culture of reading and lifelong learning among Filipinos.

This gathering intends to bring to students, teachers, and writers a series of discussions on creating and reading stories that have drawn crowds and made more Filipinos fans of locally-authored works, such as graphic novels, comics, young adult novels, and romance. Local authors and illustrators such as Edgar Samar, Mina Esguerra, Manix Abrera, Eros Atalia, and Beverly Siy are expected to share their knowledge on these significant aspects of the book publishing industry and Philippine literature. Aside from the talks and discussions, there will be a book fair and book signing sessions with participating authors.

The three-day event is open to authors, illustrators, publishers, students, teachers and lovers of literature. To register, contact Juliet Polvorosa at 929-3887 loc 814 or email her at jpolvorosa@nbdb.gov.ph.

_________

Just curious, Librarians are not invited (The three-day event is open to authors, illustrators, publishers, students, teachers and lovers of literature) in a program that aims to promote culture of reading and lifelong learning? An oversight?
